Introduction

Ghazi Barotha Taraqiati Idara (GBTI) is a “not for profit” Project Non-Government Organization (PNGO) working in the Ghazi Barotha Hydro Power Project (GBHP) affected area, since 1995, with a mandate given below. The organization was established by the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), through an Endowment provided by WAPDA.

Mandate of GBTI

The mandate of GBTI is:-

  1. To facilitate Project Affected Persons (PAPs), in getting their due rights and to facilitate WAPDA in the smooth and timely completion of the project.
  2. Implementation of the Integrated Regional Development Plan (IRDP), with the participation of Local Communities
Formation of GBTI

On the basis of experiences gained tackling problematic compensation claims of the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) in mega projects of Pakistan, like Tarbella, Mangla and others, donor of the GBHP suggested the establishment of an independent non- government organization which may not only facilitate the proper, transparent and timely compensation to the PAPs but would also look after the area development. WAPDA contacted NRSP to establish such an organization. NRSP opened a new region in Ghazi Barotha Project area titled NRSP-GBHP. This region after a period of less than one year, was registered as a PNGO in October 1995, and named as the Ghazi Barotha Taraqiati Idara (GBTI).

Programme Area

Presently GBTI is working in GBHP affected areas of three districts Swabi (NWFP), Haripur (NWFP) and Attock (Punjab). There are seventeen Union Councils (UCs) affected by GBHP.
